The Wings Elite Junior Boys were down 16 points with just under 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and had 6′ 5″ Junior Forward Stetson Billings, 6′ 1″ Junior Point Guard Quan Jones, and 6′ 9″ Sophomore Power Forward Bobby Portis all out with injuries, while the game seemed out of hand to the East Coast Fusion team, the Wings did not quit and thanks to a frantic run and jump full court press led by Dayshawn Watkins. Archie Goodwin, Dusty Hannahs, Jacob Gibson, and Moses Kinglsey waiting in the hole the Wings outscored the Fusion 30 to 7 over the next 8 minutes and held a 7 point lead with 3 minutes left in the game, the 69-65 Victory gave the Wings the 10th place trophy and medals, the Wings were 1 of 4 teams to finish the 196 team event with only 1 loss. The National Champion All Ohio Red, Runner Up Memphis YOMCA, and 3rd Place team CP3 All Stars, due to a change in format this year the Wings are 10th when in the past years they would have been 6th, as the first team to experience this I am still in favor of the new format, the Teams have felt for years that once a team reaches the final 8 they should be assured of no worse than 8th, the Wings were beaten in the sweet 16 by the Florida Rams.
The Wings were led by Sophomore Point Guard Dayshawn Watkins with 23 points, Junior Guard Archie Goodwin added 16 points with Sophomore Power Forward Bobby Portis adding 8 in just a little more than 1/2 of the game. Bobby has played with a wrist injury all summer, he injured the wrist during his High School Season.
The Wings finished the Summer winning 13 of the last 15 games including wins over the Washington D.C. Team Takeover who won the Nike EYBL Regular season with a 15-0 record, Texas Pro considered to be the best Travel Team in Texas, and Florida Elite considered to be the best team in Florida. The season was a great success with most of the team improving dramatically from the long hours in the gym with the Wings Coaching Staff including Coach Leighton McRary who was back after a long tour of College Coaching and is now the Head Coach at Newport, AR High School, Coach Mac was with the Wings in 1982-83-84 and traveled with an AAU National Team to the Soviet Union, his experience and leadership are greatly appreciated, veteran AAU Coach and Team Leader Derrick Williams can add this top 10 finish to his resume which includes being a part of 1 National Championship, the head coach of the only 16 & Under AAU Super-showcase Championship the Wings have won and last years 16 & Under Bronze Medalist.
The Wings returned to the basic premise the Club was designed around as a College Preparatory Elite Travel Team, practice of the fundamentals of the game, while we did not repeat as National Champions in 2011, this team will be remembered for its courage and determination even when it looked as if the year would be one of the worst in Wings History.
Congratulations to each Coach, Player, and Parent who supported the tough decisions that are made in order to insured the team work and commonality of purpose necessary to prepare these young men for October 15, 2013 when they will hear some of the same words they heard from the Coaching Staff who loves them dearly.
God Bless and have a great 2011-2012 High School Season
